Towing vs. recovery & cleanup — what's the difference?
Towing is the simple transport of a non-operable vehicle under non-hazardous conditions. Recovery involves extracting a vehicle from a difficult or hazardous situation — collisions, rollovers, submersion, or roadway departure — and may involve the release of hazardous materials. Recovery requires specialized equipment, certified personnel operating under an incident command structure, and strict compliance with EPA, OSHA, DOT, and local regulations. Due to the unpredictable nature of recovery operations, cost estimates cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Mobilization & equipment set-up ($1,500 flat)
Covers the full process of preparing, organizing, and transporting equipment, tools, and personnel to the job site — including loading, securing, and unloading of all equipment; set-up and dismantling of the rotator and other equipment; and assembling personnel for the specific and unique challenges of each job site.
Environmental compliance fee (7.75%)
Covers ongoing regulatory compliance requirements for the handling, transportation, storage, and disposal of environmentally hazardous waste. Includes EPA communication, pollution insurance coverage, and cradle-to-grave management of hazardous waste under RCRA — covering full documentation and control from creation to final disposal, in compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
Decontamination ($375 / hr)
Covers the cleaning, neutralization, and safe handling of contaminants removed from personnel and equipment during emergency response, recovery, and remediation operations. Includes gross and technical decontamination of PPE and tools, washing of vehicles, pumps, and hoses. All contaminated wash water, absorbents, and disposable PPE are collected, containerized, and managed in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Secondary spill containment — Spill Diaper™
Pursuant to the Illinois Environmental Protection Act (415 ILCS 5) and the Federal Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. §1251 et seq.), vehicles that are leaking — or have the potential to leak — petroleum-based operating fluids will be fitted with a Spill Diaper™ Containment System. This single-use device departs with the vehicle upon release or transfer. Charges include containment materials, installation, monitoring, and handling.
HAZWOPER certification requirement
HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) training is required under OSHA standard 29 CFR Part 1910.120 for any workers performing cleanup, emergency response, or corrective actions involving the uncontrolled release of hazardous substances. All applicable Dazzo's personnel are fully trained and certified.
Disposal (cost + 35%) & subcontractors (cost + 30%)
Disposal costs are billed at actual cost plus 35%. All subcontractor and outside services are billed at cost plus 30%. Disposal transport is billed at hourly equipment and personnel rates. Environmental waste storage is $225 per day prior to disposal manifest approval.
